The recent announcement that a prototype apartment has been completed on the $550 million Parklands Project, means that construction workers can now focus on the finishing touches to ensure the Commonwealth Games village will be ready in time. The prototype apartment complete with all fixtures and fittings, provides a quality control benchmark for the developer in replicating the finishing works across all 1,252 dwellings.

The massive site comprising of residential and retail precincts, along with seven hectares of parklands, is sure to be a winner with all the athletes and visitors to the games. South East Queensland businesses have secured 85 of the 91 contracts awarded for the Parklands project, with 45 of the contracts awarded to Gold Coast businesses.

The Parklands project was estimated to have supported 1,500 full-time jobs during the design and construction phase, clocking up an incredible one million hours of work. So far more than 1,800 workers have been involved with a year still to go. “All contracts for the finishing trades have now been awarded, seven of which will be delivered by Gold Coast businesses in joinery, electrical, painting, tiling, balustrades and benchtops,” said Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe.

The project will be leased to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) in 2017 in time to transform it into the village during the games. After which developer, Grocon will prepare for a mixed-use residential community including 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and 3 bedroom townhouses.
