April focus - Queensland

Queensland at a glance

The state was named in honour of Queen Victoria and is home to approximately 4.8 million people and is the second largest state in Australia with an area of 1,727,000 square kilometres.

Queensland is nearly five times the size of Japan, seven times the size of Great Britain, and two and a half times the size of Texas. The state has five of Australia's eleven World Natural Heritage areas. These include the Scenic Rim National Parks, Fraser Island, Riversleigh Fossil Fields, the Wet Tropics and one of the Wonders of the World - the Great Barrier Reef.

The Capital - Brisbane

The Queensland Government will host a major summit in April 2016 that will put a global spotlight on Queensland innovation. The Advance Queensland Innovation and Investment Summit will be hosted in Brisbane on 27–28 April with input from Queenslanders all over the state.

It will also build on the work already undertaken for the Advance Queensland program; a $180 million initiative helping to accelerate modernisation and take the state's innovation to the world.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that the summit was needed to help make new local, national and international connections, which the government recognised as increasingly important in this time of rapid change. The Queensland government has identified the importance of being at the forefront of innovation and the impact this is having on new technologies is reshaping economies around the world.

Providing the jobs of tomorrow

The Premier commented that, for Queensland to prosper in this era of rapid global change, a collective approach is needed to position the state as a global leader of ideas and invention.

The Government is creating a range of initiatives that are focussed on providing employment opportunities and job creation by offering tax rebates for apprentices and trainees. The $10 billion capital works program for 2015-16 is supporting 27,500 jobs across the state.

Minister for Science and Innovation Leeanne Enoch said that the summit would create a platform to showcase and inspire talent and help build new business collaborations. Most importantly, the summit will promote Queensland's investment opportunities and help investors find their next market-ready deal.

This opportunity is available for anyone with an original product, idea or business that contributes to Queensland and the event hopes to attract internationally renowned speakers and leaders in the field innovation and technology.

To help showcase Queensland's best and brightest, an online engagement tool has been developed that offers entrepreneurs, start-up businesses and investors a platform for submitting and sharing their ideas, innovations, products and services.
