As many businesses understand and appreciate, workplace safety starts at the top. As a core consideration, having an occupational health and safety manager in place that understands state and federal legislation should be near the top of the recruitment agenda.
These individuals lead from the front, implementing basic workplace standards in day-to-day operations. As such, the business is able to stay on the right side of the law and ensure a safe working environment for all.
Victoria setting the pace
If there is one state that is setting the standard in this area across the country, it's Victoria. According to the state's workplace authority, Worksafe Victoria, the rate of injuries has dropped to a new record low.
Based on its half-yearly results, there were 7.32 claims per million hours worked (MHW) across state workplaces at the end of December 2014. This marks a solid 0.05 reduction in the claims per MHW which was recorded at the end of the 2013/2014 financial year.
State Finance Minister Robin Scott explained that workplace injuries can be prevented, but when they do occur, it's important the right processes are in place.
"Generally workers in Victoria are safer than they have ever been, but still too many have been killed or seriously injured," she said in a March 27 media statement.
"And when it comes to support for those injured workers who have been unable to return to work, we must do more to get them back to work."
WorkSafe Victoria acting chief executive Clare Amies agreed and believed that businesses are committed to improving their safety standards even further moving forward.
"Our results show that there has been further improvements in safety in Victoria, which is a real credit to Victorian workplaces and their continued efforts to make a culture of safety a key priority," she stated.
