September 13 is R U OK Day. As you probably know, R U OK is a suicide prevention charity whose mission is to create a world where people are connected and supported. Design & Construct believe that this message is of the utmost importance, especially in our industry. Construction workers are reported as having one of the poorest levels of mental health in Australia and are six times more likely to die by suicide than an accident at work.
Days of action such as R U OK? Day are so important because they bring awareness about the topic of depression and suicide, and give us all a reminder to check in on our friends and families. Just a simple text message or phone could help someone who is struggling. It’s about taking the time to have a conversation when you notice something has changed. It’s about becoming informed and equipped so that you can help both others and yourself.
Approximately one in five Australians will experience a mental illness. So, check in with your family, partners, kids, friends and colleagues, and ask the question: R U OK?
