1300 new construction and engineering jobs are to be created in Queensland with news that the first Market-Led Proposal (MLPs), the $512 million Logan Motorway Enhancement Project, has met with approval.

Transurban Queensland Group who put forward the first MLP, also agreed to build a new $2 million community facility at Heathwood. General Manager, Wesley Ballantine said the company was proud to present the first MLP and hoped that the facility would create a lasting legacy for the community.

State Treasurer Curtis Pitt commented that the significant upgrade of the Logan and Gateway Extension motorways are expected to improve road safety, boost the economy and create new job opportunities.

"Its economic benefits are estimated to be around $1 billion over 30 years,” said Mr Pitt.

The Logan Motorway Enhancement Project is one of four initiatives that offers private sector proponents the chance to get their ideas for new projects or services off the ground faster.

More than $700 million in total have progressed onto stage 2 of the MLP process, including:

  • Port of Brisbane’s proposal to establish a new international cruise ship terminal.
  • Plans for a Queensland Aquarium and Maritime Museum redevelopment at South Bank.
  • New centre of driving excellence and a world-class innovation hub for government, education and industry groups to research, design and test new vehicle and road safety technologies.

Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety, Mark Bailey, said the upgrades reflected the feedback gained from the community on issues such as congestion travel times, road safety and connectivity.
