According to the Australian Institute of Human Resources (AHRI), recruitment can be defined as searching for and obtaining a pool of potential candidates with the desired knowledge, skills and experience to allow an organisation to select the most appropriate people.

The recruitment process is mostly about finding the right individuals who can work together and form productive long lasting relationships to ensure the stability of a company. However, sometimes things just don’t work out. Over time your unhappy employees may seek new opportunities elsewhere. So what do they do? Be upfront and inform their current employer that they are jumping ship and joining a competitor?

Well, a study by the online career portal SEEK, has revealed that employees will try to make sure their boss is kept in the dark, when it comes to attending interviews with their competitors. The survey of 4800 Australians found that one in four employees admit to lying about prospective interviews and new possible job opportunities.

The most popular excuses people used when going for a job interview are:

  • I felt sick; I had an illness or injured myself (28%).

  • I had a medical appointment (27%).

  • I had a family emergency (15%).

  • My pet was sick or hurt itself (5%).

  • I had a non-medical appointment (4%).

  • I had an external meeting away from the office (4%).

  • A relative or child was sick or injured (4%).

  • I had a maintenance issue at home (3%).

  • The car broke down (2%).

So employers, if one of your employees does ring in sick but then your new intern, on the morning coffee run, bumps into them exiting the building of your arch rival, don’t despair, help is at hand.
