The Queensland government is seeking principal consultants and design teams for a new world-class stadium to be built in the North Queensland centre of Townsville. A two-stage Expressions of Interest (EOI) and design process for the proposed 25,000-seat stadium is well underway. The stadium is expected to create up to 750 new construction jobs and attract further investment to the region with its state-of-the-art corporate facilities. “The whistle's blown and we're underway on the biggest job-creating project in North Queensland in decades,” said Minister for State Development Dr Anthony Lynham. The completed stadium will become a new home for the North Queensland Cowboys National Rugby League (NRL) team.
More than 200 businesses have already expressed interest in working on the new $250 million Queensland Stadium. The EOI is open until 19 September 2016. Following an assessment of the EOIs, tenders will be invited from shortlisted consortia, with the consultancy design consortia and concept design confirmed by the end of the year.
The vision: To develop a vibrant new stadium that attracts visitors and investment, celebrates Townsville's tropical climate, values the water edge environment, delivers high-quality public spaces and supports urban regeneration. The project is on schedule for early construction works to start on site in mid- 2017 and the project will be completed in time for the 2020 NRL season.
