Australia's first offshore wind farm - construction and maintenance jobs
The new project named ‘Star of the South’, will include 250 wind turbines within a 574-square kilometre area. The wind farm capacity is estimated to provide 18% of Victoria’s power usage, equivalent to powering 1.2 million homes.
The proposal estimates that the wind farm would reduce carbon emissions by about 10.5m tonnes a year and will provide a more affordable energy solution, compared to new gas or coal-burning power stations. The project is expected to generate a massive investment of around AUD $8 billion and create 12,000 new construction jobs and a further 300 maintenance jobs when fully operational.

Civil construction - demand for auto workers
Nearly 100 automotive workers are required in Victoria after news that a major construction manufacturer has received a grant to expand its operations. The grant from the Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT) enables Unipod to expand its specialist polystyrene business.
Unipod manufactures waffle pods, which are used to build concrete slabs for new homes, extensions and industrial buildings. They also produce and market innovative Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) to be used in wall, roof, floor and civil construction projects.
Unipod will employ auto workers and also invest AUD $9.8 million in building a world-class manufacturing plant in Truganina. This significant investment will help to position the company for the next 30 years of growth as a major supplier to the construction industry. Up to 6,000 new construction jobs will be created in Victoria.
