Conveyor system approved

A major new mining investment at Caval Ridge is set to create 400 new construction jobs in Queensland. The US $204million, 18-month investment, will see an 11 km overland conveyor belt being built to transport up to 10 million tonnes of coal each year. In addition to the new conveyor project, the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance are set to upgrade the existing Coal handling preparation plant and invest in new transportation vehicles.

Copper mine revival

Hundreds of new construction jobs are set to be created in Queensland, with the news that a copper mine is set to be revived and put into production. The state government of Queensland gave the go-ahead to reopen and refurbish the AUD $152 million Capricorn Copper Mine, north of Mount Isa.

“This is all about getting almost 90 construction jobs during construction and more than 200 direct operational jobs underway and available by the third quarter of 2017,” said Minister for State Development Dr Anthony Lynham.

The companies first production of ore is due in October and the is forecast to produce 30,000 tonnes per year of copper metal over the next decade.

Million Dollar road upgrades

Construction will begin in this year on four necessary key road upgrades on Flinders Highway and the Kennedy Developmental Road in Northern Queensland. The AUD $95.32 upgrades will significantly improve safety, traffic times and congestion levels and create local jobs in construction.

  • $17 million for pavement strengthening and rehabilitation on Flinders Highway
  • $25 million to upgrade culverts on Flinders Highway
  • $3.32 million to widen a section of the Kennedy Developmental Road
  • $50 million to progressively seal the Kennedy Developmental Road

AUD $400 million motorway project

Brisbane based Bielby Hull Albem Joint Venture, has won the contract to upgrade Ipswich Motorway in Queensland. The major infrastructure project is expected to create 470 new jobs. Construction work will include upgrading Ipswich Motorway from four to six lanes along a three-kilometre stretch.
